Dear Friends and Family,
I am sure you are all reeling from the devastating news of Juliana’s cancer diagnosis and are waiting on updates. Apologies for the impersonal email, but this seems the most efficient way to share updates as we have them for now while we work on a better communication tool moving forward.
As you know, her scans have shown that her cancer is back and has metastasized to her liver, kidneys, and a spot on her spine. This cancer has grown and spread very quickly and is very aggressive. For context, Juliana last had scans in December as part of her ongoing care from the first round of cancer in 2022. There were no signs of disease at that time.
Juliana was released from the hospital on Friday afternoon after being put on blood thinners to help with blood clots that have formed and causing discomfort, especially in her leg. They were also able to do a biopsy on her liver so that they could get a better understanding of this cancer, to find out if it is in fact the same cancer as previously or a different kind. She was very happy to get home to her bed and her dog.
Juliana spent the weekend at home surrounded by her amazing network of local friends who worked on her garden, made her delicious food and shored her up with love and laughter. Her energy was pretty good, despite experiencing physical discomfort and variable energy levels.
On Monday we met with the Oncologist to go over the biopsy results and her treatment plan. Although all the information from the biopsy is not back yet, we do know that this is a metastasis of the ovarian cancer rather than a different type. The goal with treatment is to slow or stop the growth of the cancer, but they do not believe they will be able to reverse or eradicate it. She will have treatment once every three weeks for three rounds. After three rounds they will rescan and reassess.
She started treatment today and she tolerated it pretty well. She is home now, resting and in good spirits, although we are all steeling ourselves for the reality of the side effects of chemotherapy. We are waiting to see how things go before solidifying any plan for additional food, visitors and support from her huge network of friends and family. She is responding to messages as she feels up to it, but she sees them all and is feeling the love and support being showered on her by friends and family near and far. It is incredible how her community is rallying around her, waiting for instructions on how to help and support. I will do my best to keep everyone updated as possible.
Thank you for all of the love and support you’ve given us over the last few days. We’re grateful for all of you. Hug each other and tell your people how you feel about them every single day!
